A Devastating Transformation Just One Year Has Caused in the United States

Twelve months back, the environment was utterly different. Before the American presidential vote, thoughtful Americans could acknowledge the nation's serious imperfections – its inequities and inequality – yet they still could perceive it as the US. A democratic nation. A country where the rule of law carried weight. A state guided by a respectable and decent leader, despite his older age and increasing frailty.

Nowadays, in late October 2025, many of us scarcely know the land we live in. Persons suspected of being illegal immigrants are detained and pushed into vehicles, at times refused legal rights. The eastern section of the presidential residence – is being torn down to build a lavish event space. Donald Trump is persecuting his opponents or supposed enemies and requesting federal prosecutors surrender an enormous amount of public funds. Armed military personnel are being sent into American cities under fabricated reasons. The Pentagon, renamed the Defense Ministry, has effectively rid itself of regular press examination while it uses possibly reaching nearly $1tn from citizen taxes. Universities, attorney offices, journalism organizations are submitting under the president’s threats, and wealthy elites are handled as nobility.

“America, only a few months ahead of its 250-year mark as the planet's foremost free society, has fallen over the limit into autocracy and extremism,” a noted author, commented this past summer. “Ultimately, faster than I imagined possible, it occurred here.”

One awakes with fresh terrors. And it's difficult to grasp – and painful to realize – how severely declined we have become, and the speed at which it has happened.

Nevertheless, we understand that the president was legitimately chosen. Despite his profoundly alarming initial presidency and despite the cautions associated with the knowledge of Project 2025 – despite the leader directly said publicly he planned to rule as a tyrant only on the first day – enough Americans chose him over his Democratic opponent.

While alarming as the current reality may be, it's more frightening to realize that we have only been several months into this presidential term. What will three more years of this decline leave us? And what if that period turns into an prolonged era, as there is no one to stop this leader from deciding that additional tenure is required, possibly for national security reasons?

Granted, there is still hope. There will be congressional elections next year that may establish an alternate governmental control, should Democrats recapture the Senate or House of the legislature. There exist elected officials who are attempting to exert certain responsibility, for example Democratic congressmen currently starting a probe regarding the effort to fund seizure from the justice department.

And a presidential election in the next cycle could start our journey to recovery precisely as last year’s election placed us on this disappointing trajectory.

There are countless citizens demonstrating in urban areas of their cities, like they performed in the past days at democracy demonstrations.

An ex-cabinet member, wrote recently that “the dormant powerhouse of the nation is stirring”, similar to past post-McCarthyism during the fifties or throughout the Vietnam war protests or in the Nixon controversy.

During those times, the listing ship finally returned to balance.

The author states he recognizes the signs of that awakening and observes it occurring at present. As evidence, he points to the recent massive protests, the broad, multi-faction opposition regarding a personality's dismissal and the near-unanimous defiance by media to sign the defense department’s demands they solely cover what is sanctioned.

“The sleeping giant consistently stays inactive before specific greed becomes so noxious, some action so disrespectful of the common good, some brutality so disruptive, that he is forced but to awaken.”

It's a positive outlook, and I appreciate Reich’s experienced view. Maybe he’ll prove to be right.

Meanwhile, the crucial issues endure: will the nation return to normalcy? Can it retrieve its status in the world and its devotion to constitutional order?

Or do we need to admit that the 250-year-old experiment succeeded temporarily, and then – suddenly, utterly – failed?

My pessimistic brain suggests that the final scenario is true; that everything could be gone. My optimistic spirit, though, convinces me that we have to attempt, by any means available.

For me, as an observer of the press, that involves urging journalists to live up, more thoroughly, to their purpose of holding power to account. For some people, it might involve engaging with political races, or organizing rallies, or developing approaches to safeguard electoral access.

Under twelve months back, we lived in a very different place. A year from now? Or three years from now? The reality is, we are uncertain. The only option is to strive to persevere.
