Antony Price, the groundbreaking UK-based designer behind a series of unforgettable images worn by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has passed away aged 80.

His reputation was built on his sculptured silhouettes and performative fashion, including the soft-colored suits that appeared in the iconic band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "the song Rio".

"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance on social media."

This news arrives just weeks after he presented his most recent collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. Singer Lily Allen modelled a dress evoking the notorious black velvet "dress" historically worn by the late Princess Diana.

A Lasting Legacy

A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price headed for London during the sixties to study at the prestigious Royal College of Art.

Shortly after his graduation, he commenced his career designing menswear at the label Stirling Copper and was responsible for the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger wore during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in the late sixties.

He founded his own label in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show featured as its opener looks from model Jerry Hall, who later wore the bridal gown Price specifically designed for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.

Working with Legends

A key creative partner of David Bowie, Price designed the distinctive jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His trademark skill to blend elements of men's and women's fashion along with his masterful technique in shaping body-hugging looks made him a "genuine original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.

During the nineties, he began working on ensembles for Camilla, now Queen Consort, which included several ensembles for her US tour after becoming Duchess.

With a vocation that covered more than five decades, Price staged what would be his last show in London just last month in collaboration with the label 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: The core of his aesthetic.
  • Theatrical Flair: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
  • Genre-Blending Design: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
  • Clients from Stage to Palace: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.

The fashion world mourns the loss to a genuine innovator whose impact on style and culture remains indelibly etched.
