Bellingham Needs to Eliminate the Nonsense to Reclaim a Key Place In Tuchel.

For Bellingham to hopes to fight his way back into the English top team, it would be smart to eliminate the nonsense. His response upon realizing that his number was being shown following a night of mixed performance in Tirana was not good enough.

"I prefer not to blow it out of proportion but I stand by my words 'conduct is crucial' and consideration for the teammates who enter the game," stated Tuchel. "Decisions are made and you have to accept it as a player."

The midfielder must understand. There was no need for a strop. Harry Kane had recently scored to make the national team 2-0 up in a meaningless match, the game had six minutes to go and he, who had not played particularly well, was just shown a yellow for fouling an opponent. This was hardly a controversial substitution. In fact it would have been foolish for the head coach to keep Bellingham on the pitch given that there was a risk the midfielder would make himself ineligible of the initial fixture of the tournament by picking up a another booking.

Drawing Attention Upon Himself

But Bellingham turned the spotlight on himself. There was no disguising the 22-year-old’s disappointment when he clocked that he was going to make way for Morgan Rogers. He threw his arms up and even though he accepted the coach's hand on his way to the touchline it was obvious that Tuchel was not impressed.

This is the challenge for Bellingham. He praised Marcus Rashford for delivering the cross for Kane to head in his second goal, but everything else was harmful to his cause. There was no chance protesting was going to change Tuchel’s mind. Tuchel has repeatedly emphasized honoring the team structure and the importance of behaving correctly.

In the Spotlight

He, omitted from the team last month, is being watched carefully after returning to the fold in the current camp. Practically his place has been in question and his actions haven't benefited him by reacting to his substitution as the side wrapped up a perfect qualifying campaign by overcoming a tough opposition from Albania.

Tactics and Formation

As a result it's unclear on how England function at their best with Bellingham in the team. What we saw was open to interpretation. Some new ideas were tested from the manager early on. He has given the squad organization and direction lately, building with a No 6, a box-to-box player, an attacking midfielder and specialist wingers, but there was a different feel in this match. The young defender was handed his international debut, Wharton was in the starting lineup at this level and the positioning of John Stones as an auxiliary midfielder created a passing resemblance to Manchester City’s 2023 treble winners.

A Game of Two Halves

His performance was inconsistent. He set up a shot for Eberechi Eze in the latter period but at times seemed trying too hard. He made many hurried and errant passes. An unnecessary confrontation with an Albania midfielder at the beginning. England were ragged after halftime. One Albania chance followed Bellingham squandered possession. The yellow card was shown after an opponent took the ball by Broja and fouled the attacker.

Substitutes Decide

Finally the bench quality proved crucial. Tuchel introduced Phil Foden, who looked better suited to the role occupied by Bellingham earlier in the match, and the Arsenal winger. Later Saka provided a corner kick for Harry Kane to score the first goal. It was a reminder that corners and free-kicks will play a key role at the World Cup.

Relationship Not Broken

Nevertheless, Bellingham was the story. The quality of Rashford's cross for Kane’s header was somewhat overlooked due to the fuss of the player change. At the end, the focus was on Bellingham. Tuchel walked up to his side and guided the player to acknowledge the English fans. The bond between them is not damaged. Tuchel hasn't decided to abandon the player just yet. But if the coach is prepared to give him centre stage remains in doubt.
