Bushfires Engulf Western Australia as Temperatures Soar

Scorching conditions and intense wildfires have devastated the parched landscape of Western Australia. As temperatures forecast to persist climbing above 40C (104F) over the next few days, a severe heatwave warning has been issued across much of the south-west.

Widespread Heatwave Warnings Across the Region

This situation come after recent fires in New South Wales, which caused the destruction of properties and fatalities. Severe heat alerts have also been issued for later this week in areas within South Australia and New South Wales, as a ridge of atmospheric pressure moves to the east, delivering intense heat to a broad swath of the area.

The mix of extremely dry land and unbroken heat presents a volatile situation for emergency crews.

Global Weather Extremes Cause Disruption

In another part of the world, a metropolis was left in blackout recently after strong winds compromised the urban power grid, with toppled trees bringing down electricity cables. The stormy weather also led to significant travel disruption at a major airport, where hundreds of air services were grounded. Severe damage to power systems is anticipated to cause ongoing problems as utility companies work urgently to restore power to over 1 million residents.

Atypical Fog Blankets Typically Clear Area

At the same time, a region famed for its sunny weather and abundant sunlight has endured one of its dullest and most overcast periods on record. A specific type of low cloud, which usually lingers for only a short time, has been remarkably widespread and persistent this year, keeping the mercury at a major airport under 8C for more than a week – the most prolonged period in more than three decades. The extended haze has been driven by exceptional autumn rainfall that left soils waterlogged.

Severe Weather Delivers Snow to Holiday Destination

And in another country, a powerful storm has brought heavy rainfall, strong gales and even snow to a set of islands – weather many would not connect with this popular holiday destination. While snow is not unknown at higher ground, the system brought some of the heaviest snow depths since 2016 to a protected area, forcing its closure.

Alongside the snow, strong northerly winds buffeted the island chain, with wind gusts reaching 50mph observed on several islands. The influence of the weather event is expected to ease this week with more seasonal weather taking hold.
