Explosion Takes 3 Carabinieri Amid Property Removal Operation in Northern Italy

Three members of law enforcement were killed and more than a dozen additional individuals sustained injuries in an apparently intentional blast caused by gas at a country home in Italy's north.

How It Happened

The explosion took place as law enforcement and fire personnel went into the property near the Verona region to enforce an removal notice for two brothers and a sister in their late 50s and mid-60s.

The three victims who died belonged to the Carabinieri force.

Investigation Developments

One male and one female were taken into custody at the scene and a third person who ran away after the incident was located shortly later. The trio have been taken to the hospital.

The blast could be audible as far as 3 miles distant and footage from the location displayed the building reduced to a pile of rubble.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” commented Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who added that efforts had been made to remove the three siblings in the previous occasions.

The leader of the region of Veneto, President Zaia, explained the property was subject to an court order due to financial obligations accumulated by the property owners.
