The most severe possible consequences of the climate crisis for the UK have been outlined by researchers, ranging from a searing 4C rise in mean temperatures to a 2-metre surge in sea level. Another scenario predicts a drop of 6C in temperature following the shutdown of critical Atlantic Ocean currents, which would severely impact food production and energy needs.
These consequences, a number of which are associated with irreversible climate shifts, are considered as unlikely but credible. The scientists explained that these scenarios filled a gap in forecasting that had rendered the UK unprepared for extreme outcomes.
"The worst-case scenarios we have mapped should not be seen as certainties, but they are plausible," commented Nigel Arnell who directed the study. "The nation has been formulating policy in the absence of the tools to plan for extreme possibilities. We've now given policymakers what they need to plan for climate outcomes they hope never happen, but must not overlook."
Another collection of severe models sets out the possible scale of harsh climate between now and the close of the 2100s. These indicate that temperatures could soar in certain periods by up to 6C higher than historical levels, while precipitation could be three times normal levels.
The probability of the worst-case outcomes coming to pass could not be calculated due to uncertainty about what action will be implemented to address global heating and how the planet's climate will respond. This analysis was described as similar to national security risk assessments or scenario planning for the banking sector.
The severe models could be used to inform the construction of critical national infrastructure, for example expanded cities, power generation facilities and water management networks. Knowledge about these future hazards could also speed the drive to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The analysis developed the severe projections using a blend of observed and historical experience, computer simulations and scientific theory. These outcomes do not take into account international cascading effects including the devastation of food supplies and resource wars.
The research was commissioned as part of a official risk assessment framework. Previous assessments have warned that not enough attention was being given to low‐likelihood but high‐impact risks.
An independent advisory body has said that the UK needs to "adapt to 2C" and evaluate the threats for 4C. Previous adaptation plans have been described as being "inadequate" by environmental groups.
A government spokesperson noted: "Global warming is at the center of the country's focus, both building resilience and transitioning to a renewable energy leader. It is vital that the UK is prepared for the impacts."
