Figures from across the partisan spectrum and the entertainment world are uniting to denounce former President Donald Trump for his remarks in the wake of the shocking deaths of renowned director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
Following the discovery of the couple deceased at their Los Angeles home, Trump took to social media to label the late director as "anguished and struggling". In a post, he claimed Reiner's demise was "due to the hostility he caused others through his massive, relentless, and incurable condition with a debilitating disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
His comments quickly shifted to self-praise, juxtaposing Reiner's alleged "raging obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump called the "unprecedented era of America".
Authorities have since announced the detention of the couple's 32-year-old son, Nick, on suspicion of homicide in relation to the incident. Reports indicate his bond was set at a substantial amount.
The response to Trump's words was immediate and scathing.
This is a vile and despicable statement,” remarked public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Media personality Whoopi Goldberg, who called Reiner a close acquaintance, similarly condemned the remarks. She referenced previous rhetoric from Trump regarding the killing of an activist, asking, "Do you have no decency? Can you get any lower?"
California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, simply wrote, "He is a sick man."
Mirroring this view, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost said, "What a despicable piece of garbage."
Senator Chris Murphy commented, "Trump has just crossed a line. Now saying Rob and Michele Reiner brought on their own demise because they opposed him. Deeply disturbing."
A number of GOP elected officials also expressed dismay.
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the event was "a personal tragedy, not about political feuds or political enemies". She also mentioned struggles with addiction and psychological well-being within families.
Fellow Republican representative, Thomas Massie, called Trump's remarks "inappropriate and disrespectful" considering the circumstances. He openly challenged members in his party to justify the comments.
Rob Reiner was long a vocal detractor of Donald Trump. In a previous interview, he stated Trump was "mentally unfit" for the presidency. He had also cautioned about the risks of autocracy if Trump be reelected to power.
"There is autocracy on the rise around the world," Reiner noted. "Should the United States crumble, there’s a risk that democracy collapse around the world."
Despite his strong opposition, Reiner had previously shown "absolute horror" and condemned political violence unequivocally after the killing of another individual.
Adding a layer of past connection, Michele Reiner, previously Michele Singer, was the artist who captured the cover image for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had once recounted the anecdote of the session, mentioning Trump's demand for "a specific hair product" as being photographed on a skyscraper with a view of Central Park.
