Canada's skeleton athletes have been absolved of accusations that they deliberately manipulated a selection race for the Winter Olympics, which allegedly denied rival athletes a chance to secure their place.
US skeleton veteran a five-time Olympian accused the Canadian squad of withdrawing a majority of its competitors from a race in Lake Placid. The allegation was this shrunk the competition, making fewer qualifying points available. Although she took first place, the American athlete did not secure her berth for the Milan-Cortina Games.
“Existing federation regulations allow member nations to withdraw athletes from competition at any time,” stated the International Bobsleigh & Skeleton Federation (IBSF).
Following an investigation, the federation stated it would not impose sanctions, dismissing the complaints as there was no breach of its regulations.
Reacting to the claims, Bobsleigh Canada Skeleton stood by the withdrawals, pointing to competitor health and the need for rest. The organization stated that some athletes had already raced multiple times that week and the move was “appropriate, transparent and aligned with both their well-being and the sport's fairness.”
Representatives of the US, Denmark, Israel, and Malta had previously expressed “serious concerns” about the selection system's integrity.
The 41-year-old athlete, the Milan-Cortina Games represent her final Olympic appearance. While she can still qualify, the likely American berths are projected for other athletes. She is a former world champion whose closest Olympic finish was fourth place in Sochi 2014.
This incident comes during a time of increased rivalry in sports between the two North American nations. Statements from political figures and trade disputes have added to a spirited sporting rivalry. Recent memorable clashes include the 4 Nations Face-off and a thrilling World Series between teams from the neighboring nations.
