The Former President's Actions Present a Risk to Our Social Fabric.

His national and international policies – ranging from the effort to overturn the election in the past to current actions and warnings – undermine not only national and global jurisprudence. However, the issue goes deeper.

These actions endanger the fundamental meaning of civilization itself.

A moral purpose of any advanced culture is to forestall the stronger from preying upon and using the less powerful. Without this, we would be permanently immersed in a brutish war where might makes right wins.

This concept is embedded of the nation's founding texts. It is equally the core of the postwar international order advocated by the US, which stresses multilateralism, democracy, human rights, and the legal authority.

Yet, it is a fragile ideal, easily violated by those who choose to misuse their influence. Upholding it necessitates that the powerful have a sense of duty to abstain from seeking immediate gains, and that the public ensure they answer for their actions when they fail.

Unfettered might does not equal right. It makes for turmoil, upheaval, and conflict.

Each instance entities that are richer and more powerful target and use those that are not, the fabric of civilization weakens. Should such behavior are not contained, the system fails. Allowing it to persist, the world can fall into instability and violence. We have seen this pattern previously.

Our current reality is a global community grown vastly more unequal. Influence and wealth are more concentrated than ever before. This encourages the privileged to leverage their position against the less fortunate because they perceive themselves as untouchable.

The fortunes of certain ultra-wealthy individuals is staggering. The power of global industrial giants extends over much of the globe. AI is poised to consolidate economic and political clout even more. The destructive power of the leading countries is without parallel in the annals of time.

Enabled by complicit legislators and an accommodating supreme court, the presidency has been turned into the supreme and answerable-to-none instrument of the state in the modern era.

Put it all together and you grasp the threat.

An unbroken thread connects earlier lawless actions to present-day menaces. Both were founded upon the arrogance of omnipotence.

There is much the same in other global contexts: in wars of aggression, in strategic threats, and in the worldwide exploitation by industrial titans.

But, raw power does not make right. It makes for fragility, upended order, and armed conflict.

The lessons of the past reveal that frameworks designed to constrain the powerful also safeguard them. Without such constraints, their endless appetite for more power and wealth in time lead to their downfall – and with them their corporations, nations, or empires. And pave the way for international catastrophe.

This blatant disregard for rules will cast a long shadow over the nation and the world – and the very idea of a rules-based order – for a long time.
