The recent Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled several fascinating upcoming titles, but one in particular has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience appears to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.
"It's a unique experience where a girl harboring multiple human souls within her must escape from a maze of the mind," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of teenage years. Inside her exist four separate souls, each with their own anxieties and motivations. These souls can take over spontaneously, unleashing their deep-seated phobias upon her suddenly.
Judging by showcased footage, much of the narrative takes place within a eerie hospital, though other scenes depict the protagonist navigating a abandoned church.
"What are you fearful of? What makes you uncomfortable?" asks creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. People in power. Things that appear minor to other people can trigger a deep instinct inside us. This game delves into that idea — fears that are unique to every individual."
The core gameplay loop involves controlling the persona that surfaces at any given moment. However, these souls will change against your will during gameplay. During exploration, each soul's anxieties become exaggerated and attack the girl in succession. When the soul shifts, so does the specific fear the player encounters.
At first glance, UN:Me displays noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The setting is populated by orderlies who all share the identical visage, with disturbingly broad grins. Figures in the lobby have large flowers where their necks should be. Floral motifs are an ever-present theme, contrasting natural beauty with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique twist. Players must determine which of the four entities haunting the heroine is the "true" one. "All four souls asserts that the physical form belongs to them," notes a developer. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is real."
Once players believes a persona is fake, they must eliminate it. However, since each soul can deceive or hide the reality, it is very easy to make a mistake.
"Maybe you've already destroyed the true [soul] by your own actions," a voice states. "The final entity standing might be a fake. Either way, your decisions are irreversible."
UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced release date, but it is can be wishlist on digital storefronts.
