Last October, Adult Swim welcomed back its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. However, not long after, the network introduced a brand-new animated series with a strikingly different feel. Haha, You Clowns was heartwarming and calm, reminiscent of a animated take of a laid-back talk show. In an era often marked by cynicism, this show's earnestness struck a chord and helped it become a breakout hit.
On December 18th, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for a further two seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The show follows three respectful teenage brothers whose central trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four key characters.
"I’m so grateful to the fans of the show who welcomed the series and shared it with others," stated Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for a little longer."
In the same announcement praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He thanked the fans who found the show and championed its peculiarly charming sensibility.
"All of you got behind this new show, championed for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something deeply soothing about observing this endearing family navigate their simple existence.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa expressed his desire to help comedy break out of its long-running cynical streak. He traced this trend to a broader media landscape.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” noted Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we must laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa may well help usher in that very evolution. If nothing else, the renewal promises audiences additional episodes to enjoy the warm glow of the beloved Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
