The Red Devils Poised to Secure German Striker Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich

The Women's Super League club are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific German forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from Bayern Munich.

A Marquee Acquisition for United

Schüller, who has six months left on her deal, is known as a prolific goal-getter for her club and the national team. Having netted over 100 goals for the German giants and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for her country. This signing is viewed as a major signing for the WSL team.

Departure from Bayern has been anticipated since she appeared to be holding back emotions while applauding the German club’s fans following a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.

It was reported in December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its leading forwards. According to reports, all the paperwork for the move have now been completed.

Reliable Goal Threat to Strengthen the Forward Line

The experienced striker's arrival is expected to provide a major boost to United’s attacking options. Schüller has been highly consistent with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.

  • Over seven straight seasons, including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
  • She claimed the Golden Boot in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.

Building Steam at Old Trafford

Securing the German international comes at a time when United appear to be gathering positive momentum.

Recent on-pitch successes include qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.

Off the pitch, the mid-season window has brought additional activity:

  1. The signing of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
  2. The contract extension for Japanese playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, a fan favourite since arriving in 2023.

Regarding Miyazawa’s extension, a club official stated: “She has become a vital part to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and technical ability enables her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”

The new defender, having joined from a club in the American league, said: “You can sense how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
