The White Sox Secure Power Bat Munetaka Murakami on a Lucrative Two-Year Contract.

In a notable move for their retooling roster, the Chicago White Sox have welcomed slugger Munetaka Murakami, finalizing a lucrative contract for the high-profile player.

Contract Details and Added Benefits

The contract features a substantial signing bonus, issued within 30 days, in addition to salaries of $16 million for the next season and $17 million for the final year.

Additionally, Murakami's 2027 salary is subject to escalators based on accolade achievements in 2026:

  • An additional $1M for being named the MVP award.
  • $500K for finishing in the top three in MVP voting.
  • A quarter-million for placing between fourth and tenth.
  • $250,000 for being named the ROY honor.

The agreement includes that he cannot be sent to the minor leagues without his approval and makes him a unrestricted player at the termination of the contract. Further benefits include a club-supplied interpreter and travel costs between his home country and the States.

Compensation and Historical Context

As part of the transaction, Chicago must pay a compensation payment of $6,575,000 to the Swallows, Murakami's former team in Japan's professional league. The Yakult organization are also entitled to a supplemental fee of fifteen percent triggered performance bonuses.

Murakami will become the fourth player from Japan to suit up for the Chicago franchise, in the footsteps of reliever Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), second baseman Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Of note, Takatsu previously coached Murakami during their time in Japan.

Career Highlights

Murakami, a left-side batter who turns 26 soon, bolsters a promising group of offensive players in Chicago that also features prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The club are finished with a difficult season, finishing last in the division but representing a 19-game improvement from the prior campaign.

A two-time league MVP honors in 2021 and 2022, Murakami is renowned for a historic 2022 season where he launched 56 HRs, breaking the single-season record for a player in Japan previously held by icon Sadaharu Oh. That performance also made him the youngest player ever to win Japan's elusive Triple Crown.

His last year was shortened to just 56 appearances due to an oblique injury. Despite striking out 64 Ks, he hit .273 with 22 home runs and 47 driven in.

Over his eight-year tenure with the Yakult club, Murakami has accumulated a .270 lifetime batting average with 246 home runs, 647 runs batted in, and nearly 1,000 strikeouts in 892 games. He started playing primarily at first, he has since transitioned to third base.

WBC Heroics

Murakami's clutch hitting were on full display during the last World Baseball Classic. In the penultimate game against Mexico, he delivered a game-ending two-base hit that scored Shohei Ohtani and Masataka Yoshida for a thrilling one-run win. The following day in the final against the United States, he slugged a game-tying homer in the second inning, paving the way for Japan's 3-2 3-2 victory.

The new White Sox addition is set to be officially presented at a introductory event on Monday.
